The TESOL International Association and Benefits of Membership

Do you know what sets the TESOL International Association (often referred to as TESOL) apart? It is the largest international organization for people dedicated to the field of English language education, and specifically English to  speakers of other languages. As a long-term member, I’d like to share with you my three favorite membership benefits.

Continuing Education Opportunities

First, TESOL provides opportunities for on-going education, offered throughout the year to meet the needs of practicing educators. For example, there are certificate programs offered, such as Developing an Online Teaching Program and the ELT Leadership Management Certificate. The Management Certificate can also be completed in person at the annual TESOL convention. I did the in-person workshops, which was very convenient because 70% of the workshops were offered the day before the convention. In addition, there are online courses available in either a self-directed or group format and CEUs (Continuing Education Units) may be earned. (*Note that additional fees are usually required to participate in these programs.)

Annual Conventions and Conferences

TESOL also hosts an annual convention attended by over 6,000 members.  Choose what interests you. Present or attend one of the 1,000 professional development sessions, enjoy networking events, participate in a group dedicated to a specific focus (such as Materials Writing), or volunteer. Visiting the Exhibit Hall provides a convenient opportunity to talk to vendors about their recent products (such as online placement tests) and to publishers about their latest books. We in Portland are already anticipating hosting the convention again in 2023. Cities in the United States or Canada are always the venue.

Publications

Furthermore, the organization publishes resources through TESOL Press. Members receive three complimentary periodicals in addition to discounts on the close to 100 books published by TESOL Press annually on many topics.

To learn more about all of the benefits, this brochure describes the resources and professional development opportunities that are available to TESOL members and non-members.
